On the State of Political Rage, Part 5: On the Reptilian Brain, the Reprobate Brain, and the Holy Spirit Brain

Phyllis Beveridge Nissila

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. –Franklin D. Roosevelt

Do not fear, for I am with you;
Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, surely I will help you,
Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. –Jehovah Jireh

Emotions can stop critical thinking faster than just about anything else; therefore, ginning up emotions is one of the most highly effective weapons in the arsenal of rage-mongers including those in the political arena.

If they can get their victims flustered, frustrated, angry, or enraged, they know that the part of the brain popularly known as the “reptilian brain,” technically, the basal ganglia, will override out of necessity the higher level critical thinking skills essential to comprehend the bigger picture and determine the most effective long-term response to whatever threatens immediate survival.

The reptilian brain, according to Dr. Paul MacLean‘s theory, is the seat of the emotions and neurological mechanisms that keep us safe and alive, such as determining whether to fight, flee, or freeze and determining whether or not a source of food is safe to eat. It also governs the emotions involved in reproduction and regulates the autonomic nervous system that keeps the heart beating and the lungs expanding and contracting with every breath.

Just as the circulatory system will re-route blood to areas of critical need and adrenaline will rush to aid a fight, the brain will also focus on this area of cognition, of knowing, to meet the survival need of the moment.

Whether or not a threat is real or just seems real.

Seems real? For example and to my topic of politics and rage, think of how many times in recent history there have been what is dubbed “false flag events” where, once the investigations take place and the truth is out what happened is not exactly what was advertised, as it were. Nevertheless, what followed the events caused the whittling away of more and more of a citizen’s privacy and freedom and we submitted to, even clamored for, more “protection” from the government, due to the need to regain the sense of safety.

But it is soooooo human to respond to a perceived danger like that–which is what the control mongers know–and exploit. Then, later on, when the truth comes out, it is soooooo hard to ignore the natural frustration and anger when the instigators continue to blatantly lie while they cinch the rope of control tighter and tighter around the populace.

But what did they know and exploit? They knew–and know–that getting us all panicked up and focused on immediate survival buys them a little more time behind the curtain, as it were, adjusting the smoke and mirrors of deception…

Perhaps you, like me and millions more, have been completely flummoxed by the words, actions, and “logic” (read: ill-logic) of so many in positions of power and influence these days who are beginning to get it that more and more of us get it about what they are up to…while we shake our heads and throw up our hands in utter disbelief. Feeling powerless. Feeling frustrated.

Which can easily lead to anger.

Which can easily lead to rage.

Which the rage and fear-mongers love as they circle around to the next psy op/false flag/lie designed to take even more advantage of their victims, a vicious circle, if not exposed, meant to herd critical thinkers further and further away from truth and closer and closer to chaos which increasingly enables evil.

Okay, breathe…

Anybody who steps off the panic grid for a moment realizes we need to step off for good if we are to martial the parts of our smarts that analyze and synthesize* the overt and covert nature of evil and then figure out how to best the worst. Not easy, as war drums, figurative and literal, seem to sound louder and louder, but still possible–with discipline, dedication, and determination.

Let’s hope there is still time, however, for the kind of long-term muscle it will take that necessitates iron intellectual resolve.

But as believers, we have another perspective to inspire and motivate us forward. Consider:

There are times when mankind gets itself into significant crises such as the world seems to be experiencing just now when, in a nutshell, good is redefined by the propagandists as evil; evil, as good.

In such times, there might be something more powerful going on than even the most brilliant troublemakers know. Something that takes them by surprise. Foils their plans. Causes their downfall. And, like Haman from the Esther story in the Bible, they end up hanging from the very ropes they rigged to hang their enemies.

See what you think.

The LORD will smite you with madness and with blindness and with bewilderment of heart. –Deuteronomy 28:27

There comes a point in the pattern of Divine intervention in the evil workings of mankind that God, Himself, curses, as it were, the evil-mongers with “madness” (wild and helpless panic), “blindness” (blind incapacity), and with “bewilderment” (stupefaction, i.e., astonishment, insensibility–the rebellious literally become dazed and confused).

Given the prophetic times we are in that many scholars agree might well be the end of the so-called Church Age which directly precedes the seven-year Tribulation when, literally, all Hell breaks loose, maybe this is at least a part of what makes the crazy-makers so, well, crazy.

I mean, how many times have you, reader, thought, said, or heard, “This (or that) is just flat-out INSANE talk (or testimony or thinking)!” Up is down, down is up.

The lies just seem to get bigger and the innuendos more ridiculous** as we genuinely try to make sense of the insensate.

Here’s another verse denoting the same phenomenon:

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate (depraved, unfit) mind, to do those things which are not convenient (not fitting or proper, shameful); (Romans 1:28).

We do not know when, if, how, where, and to whom this kind of “giving over” happens, but while taking some time to think critically about the crazy-making state of politics these days (and those of us who have weathered many administrations can attest to the uniqueness of the era), this helps the believer quell the reptilian brain, if you will, while also  encouraging him/her to “look up, for your redemption draweth nigh,” both of which tactics help us overcome the weapon of mass (mental and emotional) destruction known as rage-mongering.

Meanwhile, we have News of our own to get out:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal (John 3:16).

Easy to forget THAT, too, when the (political) wolves howl at the door…

And now comes the good part.

Among numerous Scriptures encouraging believers to keep our minds on God for not only wisdom and direction but also for peace and hope, no matter the state of world politics or chaos or fear, here is my favorite:

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee; because he trusteth in thee (Isaiah 26:3).

And here is an excerpt from the writings of one of my all time favorite Bible commentators, Matthew Henry, who elegantly expands on the intent of this verse :

“Thou wilt keep him in peace; in perfect peace, inward peace, outward peace, peace with God, peace of conscience, peace at all times, in all events. Trust in the Lord for that peace, that portion, which will be for ever. Whatever we trust to the world for, it will last only for a moment; but those who trust in God shall not only find in him, but shall receive from him, strength that will carry them to that blessedness which is for ever. Let us then acknowledge him in all our ways, and rely on him in all trials.”

I noted in the previous post on this series, “a peaceful soul is the foundation of a rational mind.” Here’s an expansion of that: with the reptilian brain quieted, thus, the mind free to expand on actions, words, and the power of God to overcome evil, one can truly step off the fear grid, take a longer, closer look around (I would add, through the lens of God’s Word and the patterns of His deliverance from evil), and come to truth. And the truth, as yet another verse explains, sets one free.

Be at peace, even now, friends, and don’t forget to look up.

*For the reader interested in exploring such things, “Bloom’s Taxonomy” is an interesting classification of the hierarchy of critical thinking.

**Here are just a few headlines revealing the craziness of which I speak in this sometimes topsy-turvy world we now live in. WARNING: various viewpoints represented. The reader might need to hold his/her reptilian brain at bay. NOTE: I am just the messenger…and, oh, feel free to grin. Don’t let them squelch your sense of humor, too…
